Even though this may look to be a bad base for making characters at first, however experimenting with the base can end up in very good character designs, especially if you make small adjustments to the base to make your character unique! I might use the base more-so as a reference than an actual base, like how an artist may look at a picture of another artist's artwork and reference it in his/her artwork.
